Work hours & Environment

The normal working week is approx 40 hours Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the job there are always opportunities to work overtime – which many plumbers do to increase their salary. Work hours and salary can also be increased during unsociable hours if you are working ‘on-call’ and are called out for an emergency call.

Plumbers can be self-employed, work as contractors or be employed full time. Being able to communicate to customers is important to help explain your work. Local travel to domestic houses, building sites and factories can be a large part of the plumber's role and this brings different environments, which is stimulating and different. Being able to work both inside and outside will be required and so will be the ability to work in cramped spaces to reach pipes and equipment.
